AILA workshop: A Success!

Street Furniture Australia held its first major event as support corporate partner of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects on Thursday, 4 September. Designing for Manufacture was held at the brand new showroom and factory in Regents Park in western Sydney. Designing for Manufacture, an industrial design workshop for landscape architects, included informative talks by leading Australian designers Roger Jasprizza and Simon Trick (OCULUS) and Ron Yuen (Street Furniture Australia). The presenters shared their knowledge of industrial design for the public space, covering everything from the sketchpad to the production floor. Forty participants enjoyed access to the new Regents Park facility, experiencing a factory tour and technical presentation of a Concourse seat assembled in 8 minutes. Changing Laneways

Wave benches, designed by OCULUS, breathe new life into Camberwell laneways. When the Boroondara Council looked at the dull, service-only laneways in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell, it saw an opportunity to reflect the character of a community. What it ended up with had even greater potential: a blueprint for laneways that could revitalise the wider municipality. An initial trial took place in Market Lane, a thoroughfare leading from Burke Road to a carpark, which hosts the Camberwell Fresh Food Market from Tuesday to Saturday each week. “It started as a thoroughfare where traders and the Rotary Club wanted to do something to liven it up and make it more useful “says Boroondara Council Senior Landscape Architect Katie Williams. “There is a lack of public seating in the area, so …

My Park Rules finalists

Close to 100 pleas for new parks have flooded in for the My Park Rules competition, with eight state and territory finalists teaming up with leading landscape architects to pitch for the coveted playground makeover. The judging panel, including Lucy Turnbull AO, Sacha Coles from ASPECT Studios and Mary Jeavons from Jeavons Landscape Architecture, will consider each pitch in March, and announce the national winner on May 1. Street Furniture Australia is delighted to be an official sponsor of the competition. Highgate Primary School in Western Australia, which received 870 votes to propel it into the state round of the contest, will bid to transform bitumen and sandy yards under the guidance of UDLA. Claire Martin, landscape architect and Associate Director of OCULUS’ Melbourne studio, outlines gender sensitive thinking concepts and methodologies for urban planning.
