Designed to be one of Perth’s most sustainable communities, OneOneFive Hamilton Hill is a residential estate and redevelopment of the former Hamilton Senior High School site in Perth’s southern corridor, in Western Australia.
A state government project managed by DevelopmentWA, the project aims to demonstrate exemplary waste avoidance and resource recovery innovations in residential development.
DevelopmentWA’s Senior Manager, Naomi Lawrance says, “The landscape design preserves the existing landform and minimises cut to fill, to retain significant mature trees for shade and habitat value.”
Josh Byrne & Associates were engaged as the landscape architects, sustainability and urban water consultants on the project. Their design for the landscape “is inspired by local flora and fauna, with several small-scale pocket parks centred around existing mature trees, creating a variety of engaging outdoor community amenities to foster community cohesion,” says Lawrence.
The project incorporated recycled materials from the former high school into its design. Bricks have been reused for retaining walls and stairs, timber was repurposed in shade structures, and crushed materials were recycled into gabion seats and footpaths.
Josh Byrne & Associates specified Street Furniture Australia’s Linea range with seating and tables featuring eco-certified hardwood battens and frames powdercoated in Ironstone. Lawrance says, “The furniture selected is minimalist and elegant, complementing the warm and rustic look and feel of the recycled materials used throughout the site.”
The Arqua Dog Bubbler and Semi Hoop Bicycle Parking add further amenity to the outdoor spaces.
With local community engagement in play since the initial design process of the project, Lawrence says the community are enjoying the recreational spaces, with usage continuing to grow as more houses are completed.
