Many of us have seen the effects of great place design on a community’s social and mental health, and business prosperity. Most of your clients would value these effects, if they could be proven with hard data. You might have considered how smart city technologies can help. Join us to examine two Australian case studies that aim to quantify the impact of design, with amazing results.
In 2016 #BackyardExperiment, an eight-day activation in Canberra, attracted nearly 250% more dwellers to spend time in a thoroughfare. Social groups increased by up to 780%. Learn how we achieved this, how we measured it, and how we hope to create similar results with user-centered design in a second six-month project.
Take these findings home to show your clients, using the power of data to demonstrate why great place design and landscape architecture is a MUST.
Through this talk we aim to:
- Explore ways to quantify the impact of great place design.
- Understand how engaging the community and user-centered design techniques can benefit place activation.
- Combine human stories with data for compelling case studies that demonstrate the true value of great place design.
We are one of four companies presenting on the tour, the fourth stop at around 10.34am after talks by Scofield, Victor Stanley and WunderCovers.

Street Furniture Australia collaborated with Mobility Design Lab from Monash University to reimagine how urban bus stops and shelters could look, feel and work in the near future. The concept proposal was recently shortlisted for the Smarter Hobart Challenge, an international design competition launched by the City of Hobart in 2020. The competition called for “innovative and exciting ideas to help transform Hobart’s public transport services, and help make waiting for the bus reliable, safe, accessible and socially connective.” More than 120 entries were received from teams in Australia, the US, India, South America, Russia, Ukraine, Singapore, Hong Kong, Italy and France. The concept by Monash University and Street Furniture Australia was one of five finalists. Bus travel can sometimes suffer from “a less optimal image” compared with other modes …

Charging points in public spaces will provide peace of mind. The smart system is the first of its kind to be designed and made in Australia. It is compatible with Street Furniture Australia seats in different environments, including: The new Aria seating system, for modern, urban locations.
