Street Furniture Australia is now 100% Carbon Neutral

Posted June 2024

Street Furniture Australia’s entire product range and manufacturing operation has received carbon neutral certification through Climate Active™.

Achieving carbon neutral certification marks a significant milestone in our operation and the culmination of a four year long process of detailed measurement and analysis.

Climate Active™ is the only Australian government-backed carbon neutral certification programme for businesses to measure, reduce, and offsets their carbon emissions. It is one of the most rigorous carbon-neutral programs in the world.

An approved Emissions Reduction Strategy (ERS) is central to achieving certification through Climate Active. Street Furniture Australia has elected to use SBTi validated science-based targets to ensure their ERS is meaningful and aligns with the 2015 Paris Agreement – to limit global temperature rises to 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels.

For those emissions that can’t be eliminated, we have invested in programs to boost biodiversity, conservation and the use of renewable energy. These programs are vetted by Verra, a globally recognised provider of verified carbon units (VCUs).

Transparency is critical to carbon neutral claims. We have published our base year (FY 2022) emissions at 6760 tonnes of CO2. Our ERS includes transitioning to low carbon aluminium and reducing fossil fuels within our production process. From this base measure, we have committed to reducing scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, and to reducing scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 15% per $ of product sold by 2030. In addition we will continue to adapt using circularity principles to boost our existing product stewardship.

Kiara Spencer-Smith, Street Furniture Australia’s Sustainability Lead said: “Measuring our emissions was an empowering process. Doing so gave us the insight to target key areas where we can make meaningful changes to our operations and products to reduce our impact on the climate. The result is a data led emissions reduction strategy with science-based targets. Choosing the Climate Active certification program ensures we are adhering to international best-practice standards and greenhouse gas accounting protocols.”

Blair Saddington, General Manager of Street Furniture said: “Five years ago, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) declared a climate and biodiversity emergency. In support of AILA’s declaration, Street Furniture Australia set up our own sustainability working group and began our climate action journey, culminating in this first major milestone – achieving carbon neutrality.

There is much work still to be done. We will continue to encourage customers to buy less and to seek lasting quality in public domain furniture – the most sustainable products being those that are designed both responsibly, and to stand the test of time. We remain committed to research and development to find more sustainable materials and methodologies, with a firm focus on improving the public realm for all.”
