Kuching Waterfront International, Malaysia (1993)

The Conybeare Morrison/ Street Furniture team’s response to the design of the Kuching Waterfront included the development of a special ‘family’ of street furniture which reinterpreted some of the rich traditions of the indigenous populations into a contemporary expression of a progressive Malaysian
society. Designs were successfully prepared for seats, litter bins, railings, shelters, paving, decorative markers, historic maps and plaques, as well as fountains and sculptures.

Selected furniture items were manufactured by SFA and assembled locally incorporating local material such as Belian timber battens for seats. The Kuching Waterfront has been the recipient of several awards for its contribution to urban design.
