Morton Road Sports Hub SA, Australia (2022)

City of Onkaparinga has built a $3.5 million active recreation hub, dedicated to improving the lives of the local community through sport, in an underpriviledged area in Christie Downs, South Australia.

Council, in collaboration with the South Australian Government, the Australian Government, Christie Downs Community House and Roger Rasheed’s Sports Foundation have transformed an underutilised reserve with a new skate park, multi-use courts, junior and youth play spaces, seating, barbecue facilities and a basketball node.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson said “The Morton Road Sports and Community Hub is a place that not only allows young people and families to have a hit, kick, skate or simply gather with friends and family, it’s a place that will change people’s lives through sport and keeping active.”

Local disadvantaged youth will have access to free mentoring and coaching programs by the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation – committed to making a positive impact for years to come; “They have it tough here and ‘engaging and saving’ the local children and youth is paramount. Give them a safe and inclusive place for them to be active and where the physical, mental and social impacts can be immense,” said the Foundation.

“It’s not just the facilities that will lead to this outcome – the Foundation will run structured sporting programs with the aim of leading directly to improved schooling outcomes, self-confidence and quality of life.

“Give depression and anxiety the boot, and engage children and adults through a sense of purpose, is the remit – and allow them to find a sense of community and the feeling of community ownership and pride that brings.”

Street Furniture Australia was pleased to offer a range of subsidised furniture for the good cause, including Aria Tables, Long Communal Tables and Benches, Cafe Stools and Arc Seats, to add comfort and amenity to the space.

The Aria Long Communal Table seats up to 16 users, and can be used for coaching sessions and large gatherings of family and friends.

The Aria Tables and Benches feature Wood Without Worry aluminium battens in Spotted Gum, and Textura Monument frames —making them highly durable and low-maintenance.

Cafe Stools are specified in Brilliant Yellow and Pearl White. These bursts of colour lend a feeling of fun, appealing to children and adults alike.
