Mission Dolores Park US (2019)

Street Furniture Australia’s Classic Plaza Seats, Settings and Benches were specified by the San Francisco Department of Public Works for Mission Dolores Park, for the timeless forms and adjustable legs to achieve level installation on sloping inclines.

Gabriel Meil, an urban designer with Public Works, had seen the adjustable Classic Plaza leg in action on the sculpted hills of the University of California’s Mission Bay campus, during his time with PWP Landscape Architecture.

“We wanted a classic looking bench with modern sensibilities to go with the character of the park,” he says.

Mission Dolores is a significant cultural landscape and the most intensely used park in San Francisco. Street Furniture Australia was part of a $20 million multi-year renewal project, lead by the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department and San Francisco Department of Public Works, and a consultant design team of RHAA, Hamilton + Aitken and Shared Spaces.

The first Classic Plaza installations in this iconic San Francisco place date back to Phase One of the renewal project in 2014, with the most recent installed in 2016.

The park underwent a full transformation, with fresh seating and infrastructure across the 15 acres: tailored seats and benches with custom dividers and eco-certified hardwood battens are found throughout.

The Helen Diller Playground features five picnic settings for families to enjoy.

Five years on from installation, the Mission Dolores Classic Plaza suite is still performing well, thanks to its quality Street Furniture Australia design, materials used, and regular maintenance by Council.

The Classic Plaza Seat has been a best selling product for Street Furniture Australia since 1978. Its timeless form makes it ideal for heritage areas, and for contemporary projects to stand the test of time.

The bench dividers were designed specially for the City of San Francisco by Street Furniture Australia.

The Classic Plaza has also been featured in film and television productions: one seat was recently spotted in the 2017 Netflix series Girlboss.

All-Abilities Playground, Bellerive Beach

Perched on the ocean with Mt Wellington as a backdrop, the All-Abilities Playground at Bellerive Beach Park is a fun space designed for kids to test their limits, watchful parents to relax, and groups to celebrate. Community consultation with accessibility groups and local schools undertaken by the Council provided valuable insights, says Design Officer and Landscape Architect Sally Taylor. “Across all the groups and ages consulted with there was a running theme of children wanting to go bigger, faster, higher, which supported Council’s goal of providing ‘risky play’ experiences,” she tells StreetChat. “Children were very clued into the fact that if their parents or carers were comfortable and relaxed at the park then they got to stay and play for longer. This resulted in lots of seats and tables, generous …

Eaglehawk Play Space

Eaglehawk’s $1.3M play space is inspired by the Banjo Paterson poem ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle,’ featuring a series of adventure zones for children to test their skills. The eaglehawk-shaped playground, built beside Lake Neangar, is designed by City of Greater Bendigo’s landscape architect Gary Lantzsch. The space explores storytelling through landscape architecture, he tells StreetChat. Paterson’s poem begins, “Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze”; and Lantzsch’s playground dramatises the home-grown hero’s misadventures with custom play equipment, artwork and activities. It is also an opportunity to influence children into enjoying reading and associating it with play. The designer received permission to use the 1896 poem and iconic illustrations by Kilmeny and Deborah Niland from the 1973 edition throughout the playground. The park begins at the junior end through …

Warners Bay Sculpture Walk

The Warners Bay Foreshore is a major recreational drawcard for Lake Macquarie, and a popular stop-off point on a shared pathway that runs from Eleebana to Boolaroo and Booragul. Lake Macquarie City Council refreshed the area with new plazas, extended gardens, viewing areas, a fitness trail and sculpture walk. Visitors can meet at the first artwork, ‘Beach Blossom,’ at Eleebana Lions Park, and walk or ride a bicycle, stopping off at sculptures on the way to the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. Artworks on the trail include a flying pig, a Buddhist monk, a mauve bust of Charles Darwin and a hooded figure surveying the view across the lake. The foreshore is furnished with seating and tables designed not only to look good and provide comfort for users, but also to minimise maintenance and whole-of-life …
