Berala Public School NSW, Australia (2020)

Berala Public School in NSW has selected Mall Curved Slim Benches for a new Yarning Circle in the playground – a place to conduct outdoor learning classes.

The benches feature Wood Without Worry woodgrain aluminium battens, in Spotted Gum, and Night Sky frames.

The woodgrain battens provide a timber look with high durability, and are easy to clean. They do not require oiling like real timber – only a wipe down with water when necessary. This saves custodians on maintenance costs.

Yarning circles are important within Aboriginal culture and Torres Strait Islander culture. They are often used in Australian schools as part of outdoor education programs, for students to actively listen to others’ views, take turns to talk and to promote reciprocal sharing and learning.

Petersham PS Outdoor Classroom

Petersham Public School has created a Sustainable Outdoor Learning Area to provide students and teachers with open-air classrooms and opportunities to connect with the environment. The project was driven by the school and P&C towards a vision of sustainable and environmental stewardship, and complements outdoor learning activities already in place such as a chicken coop, herb and vegetable garden cared for by students. There are four new outdoor areas: a Garden Classroom, Library Lawn, The Link and Secret Native Garden, which Principal Hugh Miller says together will enhance the school’s teaching and learning programs. “It enables us to link and embed a range of curriculum areas: English, Maths, Science and Technology, Geography, History, PDHPE and Creative Arts,” he says. “All of those disciplines can come together in new, interesting, and …

St Anthony’s Catholic School

Rainbow benches are installed in outdoor learning and play areas of St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Marsfield in northern Sydney. The students were consulted in the design of their new playground, says Principal Julianne Rook, and requested ‘Rainbow Seats’ to brighten the space. “They chose vivid, happy colours to complement the soft fall and shade cloth colours, favouring a combination of curved and straight seating,” she says. “The space is multi-functional, serving as both an outdoor learning and interactive play space.” Mall Curved Slim Benches are paired with Mall Slim Benches to create curved and straight formations. The battens are powdercoated in Lobster Red, Sensation Orange, Brilliant Yellow, Viper Green, Bondi Blue and Jaybird – with Lobster Red frames – for the rainbow effect. The colours are part of …

Moore Street, Canberra

Aria Seats and Simple Bins have been optimised for long-term maintenance and to complement the shape of the space at 12 Moore Street, Canberra. The Aria two-seaters and curved configurations fit around planter corners with 90 degree connector modules, and in sheltered nooks. The round 80L Simple Bins match the seats, featuring Textura Monument frames and aluminium woodgrain Spotted Gum battens. These batten and frame materials are an ideal combination for easy cleaning and maintenance. The textured and anti-mar Textura powdercoat range is highly recommended for bins, as it is easy to wipe clean. Woodgrain aluminium provides a warm timber look – recommended for places with cold climates such as Canberra – without the need for regular oiling. The refurbishment of this ground floor entrance has “modernised and refreshed” the …
