Victor Harbor Mainstreet SA, Australia (2019)

The Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct project transforms the town centre into a vibrant public space that reflects its seaside town character and heritage, and celebrates its connection with the marine environment.

WAX Design and Outside Ideas collaborated with the City of Victor Harbor, SA Government, mainstreet traders and the local community to deliver the first two stages of the upgrade, on Ocean and Coral Streets.

With a focus on functionality, accessibility, place and innovation, the design is inspired by the Southern Right Whale as a living icon for Victor Harbor and includes creative use of paving, landscaping, drainage, art, lighting and furniture.

Dual Frame Bin Enclosures, 240L, with garbage and recycling units, have been installed with custom signage and finished with eco-certified Jarrah hardwood battens.

Arqua Drinking Fountains, with Dog Bubblers, provide fresh drinking water along the precinct. The 316 electropolished stainless steel finish used is the best marine grade option for seaside locations.

Southern Right Whales are central to the design, particularly in stage one. The whales migrate to Victor Harbor each year and have been a continuous part of local history and culture for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

The dimensions of the intersection in stage one, and landscaped nodes, reflect the size of a mature Southern Right Whale, providing an understanding of the extreme size of the animal.

The landscape and drainage system reflects the baleen plates of the whales, used for filtering food. The planting beds form a pattern along the street, emulating barnacle clusters that form across the head of the whale.

The custom street lights represent the whale’s ribs.

The precinct was inducted into the Mainstreet SA hall of fame after receiving the title of South Australia’s best regional mainstreet twice. It also won the 2017 AILA SA Landscape Architecture Award.

Constitution Avenue

An upgrade of Constitution Avenue, from Capital Hill through to Mount Pleasant Nature Reserve, features a custom suite of furniture with touches of brass. Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects and Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture, with Street Furniture Australia, SMEC (urban strategy) and Able Landscaping, contributed to the transformation. “Like Paris’ Champs-Elysses or Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue’s successful upgrade will establish it as one of the memorable urban boulevards and vistas of the world,” says Hill Thalis. “The resolution of its legible structure through fine, strong materials and detailing in the public domain will lend the Avenue an appropriate civic decorum, while making space for all the transit needs of a 21st century city.” The ACT Government received a $42 million federal grant for the 2.5 kilometre upgrade to celebrate the Centenary of Canberra. It includes …

Kingscliff Foreshore

This $22-million foreshore revitalisation is designed to create a link between the beach, the new central park and the CBD for the highly engaged Kingscliff community. The project conducted community consultation at several points, to make a place that locals can call their own. “Everyone who has worked on this project has done an outstanding job and I know the community is excited to take ownership of their new park,” said Mayor of Tweed Shire, Councillor Katie Milne. Landscape Architect Ian Bentley led the design for Council, he says, “Before Rowan Robinson Park there wasn’t a place in Kingscliff for large gatherings, to watch bands, to accommodate thirty kids at a birthday party or a place to hang out and watch others pass by. With its completion the community now …

Canberra Light Rail

The first stage of Canberra’s new Light Rail connects Gungahlin, through Dickson to the City, with 13 stops along the 12km track. The stops have a distinct architectural form, says designer Architectus, that will make “a significant contribution to place-making along the network.” “They will be significant landmark structures. The materials and finishes are consistent with the stature and quality of other key landmark projects in the National Capital,” they say. “We have designed the Capital Metro Project for Canberra, delivering civic dignity and pride and a quality of public space equal to Canberra’s most important public and cultural projects.” A custom furniture suite, also designed by Architectus with additional support and manufacturing by Street Furniture Australia, is installed at each station. Premium materials, including polished exposed aggregate concrete by …
