Long Island Rail Road US (2022)

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Expansion project introduced a third rail track and upgraded existing infrastructure in 2022 for the busiest commuter railroad in North America, which carries an average of 301,000 customers each weekday.

The 3rd Track Constructors consortium – Dragados USA, Inc., John P. Picone Inc., CCA Civil, Inc., Halmar International LLC, Cameron Engineering and Rubenstein Associates, with Stantec as the design professional – completed the design and construction.

Executive Vice President with Infrastructure Stantec, Susan Walter, said, “Many of the stations were renovated, a few rebuilt, and lovely architectural features and new materials were brought in that blend in well with the existing community.

“The station upgrades, in addition to renovating the exterior, the interior were also all made completely ADA accessible.”

Specified by WXY, Street Furniture Australia supplied wall-fixed Concourse Seats and Aero Leaning Rails for five stations along the Main Line: Westbury, Carle Place, Mineola, Merillon and New Hyde Park.

Concourse Seat is a durable yet comfortable transit seating solution that features modular cast aluminium seat panels and frames. Specified with Sable Brilliance powder coat panels, and Palladium Silver frames. Armrests on each seat support ingress and egress for ADA (DDA), and to help more passengers to comfortably use the seat together.

Aero Leaning Rail is a robust short-term rest solution for narrow areas, ideal for crowded station platforms where space is at a premium. Specified with an anodised aluminium body and Palladium Silver frames.

The seating is wall-fixed with Street Furniture Australia’s standard wall-mount bracket, reducing visual clutter and making it easy to keep the platform clean.

Sydney Trains

The Mall DDA Seat, Concourse 4-seater and Aero Leaning Rail have been chosen to furnish numerous train stations across NSW. As part of a $33 million upgrade announced by then NSW Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian in July 2014, new lighting, landscaping, paintwork and public furniture will be installed to improve Sydney’s stations. The latest in 3D printing technology was used to create full-scale prototypes for visualisation. A key challenge for Street Furniture Australia was to modify the seats to allow for signage, as well as produce a high quantity of seats in a short timeframe. SFA approached the assembly process with lean manufacturing methods, to minimise waste at our Regents Park factory. The new Sydney Trains seats offer increased comfort and ergonomic armrests to make it easier for those who are less mobile to get …
