Five Land-e-Scape Conference Highlights

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects will host a virtual conference escape for landscape architects and public space professionals from October 12 to 15, 2020. Join colleagues from across Australia and the globe for a new and exciting program with opportunities to learn, engage and connect.

The theme of the online conference is Reset – Towards Healing, inviting landscape architects to collectively pause, reflect, discuss and explore ways the profession can contribute to what comes next. How do we heal our relationships with nature, with the places we live, work and play, and with each other?

Attendees will be able to claim a minimum of 30 formal CPD points for attendance.

Five picks from Street Furniture Australia

1. Reset – Towards Healing Program Now Available

Across four themes the conference program will explore opportunities and work already underway for Recuperation (Monday), Repair (Tuesday), Restore (Wednesday) and Reparation (Thursday).

Sessions cover bushfires, Covid-19, climate change, urban green initiatives, healing spaces, biophilic landscapes, gender equity, traditional knowledge, and community engagement.

2. The 2020 National Landscape Architecture Awards

An annual celebration of the leading projects shaping green, open and public spaces across Australia. The virtual awards will be hosted on YouTube Premiere and Zoom.

3. Wayapa Connection to Country

Street Furniture Australia is proud to sponsor a series of wellness workshops by Wayapa Wuurrk for Land-e-Scape attendees.

Wayapa Wuurrk means “Connect to the Earth” in the language of the Maara and Gunai Kurnai Peoples. Wayapa was created to change thinking around how we view the idea of what it means to be well, with a focus on Indigenous thinking that includes learning how to develop a relationship with our environment through the concept of ancient earth mindfulness.

Two live workshops will take place on Monday and Thursday, with on-demand exercises also available to stream on the Land-e-Scape platform.

4. Webinar: Homifying Sydney Olympic Park (1 Formal CPD)

This webinar will explore how human-centred design was applied for community consultation at Sydney Olympic Park. Accredited by AILA for 1 Formal CPD Point.

Human-centred design is a process more typically seen in product or software development than in placemaking. Street Furniture Australia uses human-centred design to create products and services, however, it turns out the methodology is also an effective tool for deeply understanding the needs and aspirations of a community.

‘Homify’ is a made-up word for a project that aims to bring life, joy and comfort to the everyday experiences of Sydney Olympic Park.

To ‘homify’ is to create an ambience that is comfortable and immediately relaxing … a feeling that evokes, ‘I’m home’. 

The Homify project is an initiative led by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority in collaboration with CM+ and Street Furniture Australia.

The webinar will be hosted by June Lee Boxsell, Head of Innovation at Street Furniture Australia, with David Martin and Mark Armstrong.

David Martin is a registered landscape architect and Manager of Public Domain Design with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority. David has more than 30 years of experience in both the private and public sectors and is a passionate advocate for sustainability and landscape architecture.

Mark Armstrong is an industrial designer and one of the leading human-centred design voices in Australia. Mark is a Fellow at the Design Institute of Australia and Inductee to the Hall of Fame. He is also Practice Professor in Design at Monash University, and Design Advisor to Street Furniture Australia.
