Lovell Lane VIC, Australia (2017)

Bright red custom seats designed by Outlines Landscape Architecture add colour and flair to this Melbourne laneway circuit for Whitehorse City Council.

The seats light up at night, illuminating elegant text drawn from the records of Walter E James, ‘nurseryman and florist,’ dated 1902, laser cut into the steel panels.

In multiple iterations, benches and seats featuring concrete plinths and striking red backrests, the furniture is powder coated in a custom red specifically chosen for the site, which matches the distinctive streetlights.

Far from the trendy laneways of Melbourne’s CBD, the furniture blazes on this suburban street, near Nunawading Shopping Centre.

Street Furniture Australia worked with Outlines to finalise the design for manufacturing, providing technical parameters and advice for avoiding finger entrapment.

Contractor Jasper Civil completed the installation.

Constitution Avenue

An upgrade of Constitution Avenue, from Capital Hill through to Mount Pleasant Nature Reserve, features a custom suite of furniture with touches of brass. Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects and Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture, with Street Furniture Australia, SMEC (urban strategy) and Able Landscaping, contributed to the transformation. “Like Paris’ Champs-Elysses or Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue’s successful upgrade will establish it as one of the memorable urban boulevards and vistas of the world,” says Hill Thalis. “The resolution of its legible structure through fine, strong materials and detailing in the public domain will lend the Avenue an appropriate civic decorum, while making space for all the transit needs of a 21st century city.” The ACT Government received a $42 million federal grant for the 2.5 kilometre upgrade to celebrate the Centenary of Canberra. It includes …

The Mondo, Penrith

A custom furniture suite brings light and life to a renewed outdoor space at the Penrith Civic Arts Precinct, also known as the Mondo, a small urban space where the popular Westfield Penrith, the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and Penrith City Council’s Civic Centre meet. Landscape Architect OCULUS, responding to a brief from Penrith City Council, collaborated with Street Furniture Australia on a new site-specific furniture range. An excerpt from the brief: Seating creates a comfortable, useable, and active public environment where people can rest, socialise, eat, read, or people-watch. It is a simple gesture that can go far to create an important sense of place. Seating creates places where people can see and be seen. This ability to entice people to linger is the hallmark of great and successful public spaces. …

#BackyardExperiment

A pop-up park featuring 60 movable seats, colour, living lawn, library and lighting almost doubled visitors to Garema Place in just eight days. Street Furniture Australia partnered with AILA, the ACT Government and many suppliers and community volunteer groups to activate the underused grey, open space in Canberra. The park was designed by Context and features movable Forum Seats, Cafe Tables and Stools in bright powder coat colours. An additional 30 lightweight wire seats from a popular retailer were painted and added to the space. Time-lapse footage revealed a massive rise in the number of people visiting Garema Place and spending time in the pop-up park. Visitors grew by 190%, dwellers by more than 240%, and far more children, families, couples, seniors and social groups were counted – rising by up to 780%. In a powerful study …
