Delegates burst from conference sessions onto the lawn of the National Gallery to find swivelling Flower Chairs waiting for a road test.

The Flower Chair is designed by former UNSW student Joshua Flowers, inspired by inclusive seating at Google. It is fixed yet movable, and can be powdered coated in bright colours for dramatic effect.

Street Furniture Australia reps invited festival goers to provide feedback on the prototypes for their first public appearance. We hope to feature new product prototypes at future industry events.

Selfies with the Flower Chairs popped up on the Street Furniture Australia Facebook page for a chance to win $200 worth of Interflora flowers for a loved one.

The winning photo, which achieved the most Facebook likes, belongs to Sheila Nolan from Western Australia – congratulations, Sheila!

A Registered Landscape Architect, Sheila is Treasurer of AILA in Western Australia.

“I’d like to give the gift of a flower arrangement to my Granny who turns 93 in a week’s time so it’s perfect timing for her – she particularly loves roses,” she says.

“Her name is Rosalie and is my only surviving grandparent so is very special to me.”

The Flower Chair will be released in 2017.

Garema Place was a cosmopolitan hotspot in the sixties and seventies, but has since become a deserted thoroughfare. As the International Festival of Landscape Architecture approaches, Street Furniture Australia is gearing up to release prototypes of the fixed, yet movable, Flower Chair. Last month StreetChat brought you our White Paper on the movable seat, exploring how public spaces become more inviting with the ability to decide your position. Flower Chair is a novel approach to the movable seat that is fixed to the ground, yet allows sitters to adjust their outlook.
