Chinchilla Botanic Parklands

A $5.9 million project that spans 4.2 hectares, co-funded by Western Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Government. The town is known as Australia’s melon capital. It produces 25% of the country’s watermelons, rockmelons and honeydew, and hosts a biennial Chinchilla Melon Festival including a melon skiing event. Honouring the iconic pink and green fruit, a custom designed Water Play Area is a showpiece of the Parkland’s playscapes. “The watermelon theme resonates with Chinchilla; including it in this space is an appropriate way to celebrate this important symbol of cultural identity and enhance the native planting scheme used elsewhere,” says Parklands landscape architect Mandy Rounsefell, Director of Rounsefell Design. Rounsefell collaborated with Playscape Creations on custom play equipment including a giant watermelon bucket that fills and cascades over, and pop-jets …

Woden Experiment

A six-month prototype installation aiming to bring life, joy and comfort to Canberra’s Woden Town Square, supported by the ACT Government. The concept, designed by Context, features places to work, dine, meet and play. The project follows the success of the multi award-winning #BackyardExperiment activation in Garema Place, Canberra, lead by Street Furniture Australia and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects in 2016. The ACT Government commissioned Street Furniture Australia’s R&D team to undertake a six-week exploration into the community’s experience of the square. The resulting Discovery Report informed the design, to put people at the heart of the activation. The concept is based around creating experiences for each of the six personas identified during the Discovery: Mum with pram, who attends Story Time at the library and grocery shops …

Warners Bay Sculpture Walk

The Warners Bay Foreshore is a major recreational drawcard for Lake Macquarie, and a popular stop-off point on a shared pathway that runs from Eleebana to Boolaroo and Booragul. Lake Macquare City Council refreshed the area with new plazas, extended gardens, viewing areas, a fitness trail and sculpture walk. Visitors can meet at the first artwork, ‘Beach Blossom,’ at Eleebana Lions Park, and walk or ride a bicycle, stopping off at sculptures on the way to the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. Artworks on the trail include a flying pig, a Buddhist monk, a mauve bust of Charles Darwin and a hooded figure surveying the view across the lake. The foreshore is furnished with seating and tables designed not only to look good and provide comfort for users, but also to minimise maintenance and whole-of-life …
