Environmental Strategy

Street Furniture brings quality products into the urban environment. To do this responsibly, our company is dedicated to best practice in environmental management.

Street Furniture products are made from premium materials, locally sourced where possible, and uses eco-certified timber from sustainably managed forests.

Our complete range of products is locally constructed in Australia. All products are assembled in-house for greater attention to detail and quality control using environmentally sustainable processes, and delivered from our own factories in Sydney and Brisbane.

Our world-class range of benches, tables, litter bins, ash receptacles, bollards, drinking fountains and bicycle stands are durable and built to last, requiring minimal maintenance. Each product is designed thoughtfully in order to make a positive impact in the public environment.

refill, not landfill

Street Furniture Do Somthing Go Tap

Street Furniture is an official partner and major sponsor of Go Tap!, an environmental campaign that aims to reduce bottled water use in Australia.

Go Tap! is led by environmental activist Jon Dee, co-founder of Do Something! and Planet Ark.

To assist Go Tap!, Street Furniture’s research and development team have developed the eco-friendly Arqua Station. The Arqua Station features a sculptured drinking fountain and separate refill station (with optional filter) to allow for easy public access to a fresh water supply and easy replenishment of refillable bottles.

Since launching the Aqua Station, Go Tap! and Street Furniture are proud to have achieved the following:

Australia’s First Bottled Water–Free Town: Bundanoon, NSW, September 2009.

Australia’s First Bottled Water–Free High School: Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College, NSW, July 2010.

Australia’s First Bottled Water–Free University: University of Canberra, ACT, January 2011.

Street Furniture is dedicated to GoTap!’s goal to reduce plastic bottles in landfill. Our company has provided free and subsidised Arqua Stations to local communities in an effort to further this cause.

Street Furniture is currently in discussion with community groups in the Northern Territory regarding the installation of subsidised Arqua Stations in Indigenous communities.

How we approach design

Street Furniture is focused on creating quality, world-class furniture that will enhance the urban environment for years to come.

Our company invests heavily in research and development to ensure our products are durable, functional, easy-to-use and vandal-resistance. Our engineers conduct rigorous testing of all products in order to meet the highest Australian standards. Our sustainable manufacturing processes, as well as the longevity and minimal maintenance requirements of the finished product, ensure minimal waste and responsible use of natural resources.

Street Furniture products are designed to allow for easy replacement of damaged parts. We provide our customers with the assurance that spare parts will be readily available well into the future.

Using materials responsibly

Eco-certified timber

Street Furniture timber products are assembled exclusively from sustainably sourced timber from managed forests.

Vista battens

The new Vista range features chunky wood–plastic composite battens made entirely of post-consumer waste. Coupled with galvanised steel frames, Vista products require almost zero maintenance and are built to withstand the toughest wear and tear.

Metal

Metal is the world's most recycled material and is fully recyclable. Street Furniture products are primarily assembled from steel and aluminium and contain varying levels of recycled material.

Finishes

Our product finishes include polishing, powder coating and paint.

Polishing has a minimal environmental impact.

Powder coating with polyester powder is an environmentally friendly metal finishing process. Powder coating does not contain heavy metals (it is lead-free); is free of hazardous air pollutants; does not generate hazardous waste; and contains less than 1% Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Paint is applied with isocynate-free two-pack coatings that result in a highly durable finish with low levels of toxicity and VOCs.

What we do regularly

Scrap timber longer than 600 mm is re-used for furniture products. Other scrap timber is used within the factory for various purposes, or given to our employees and local hobbyists for kindling and crafts;

Steel and aluminium are sent to local recyclers;

We collect sawdust from our factories and distribute it to our employees and local small businesses for such uses as mulching and animal companion bedding;

We give preference to local and regional material suppliers to reduce the environmental impact resulting from transportation;

We ship our products on recycled skids. Packaging cardboard has recycled content and the cardboard is recyclable.

Other notes...

Environmental Smoking Control

Creating an outdoor space to meet this requirement is easy with our wide range of seating, tables, chairs and cigarette disposal containers.

Alternative Transportation, Bicycle-Friendly Site Planning

Street Furniture bike parking products provide a suitable means for securing bicycles as recommended by council Development Control Plans.
